Food Stamp Outreach Volunteer

The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) is a non-profit organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. NYLAG is recruiting volunteers for its Food Stamp Outreach Project.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Food Stamp Outreach Volunteers will work with clients at various social service organizations in New York City. Volunteers will screen clients for eligibility and refer clients to enrollment locations. Volunteers will also distribute information regarding other social services, such as free mobile phones and home energy assistance. Volunteers are will be trained in food stamps advocacy and will learn to file for fair hearings on behalf of clients who were wrongfully denied benefits. Applicants must be willing to attend public assistance trainings. This project will primarily engage elderly and immigrant populations.

Skills:
QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills. Spanish speakers are encouraged to apply.
